Q1: What is permafocus compared to binoculars without this feature?

A: Permafocus means that the binocular is preset for distance and you will not need (or be able) to adjust the focus. These are very good for spotrting events like car racing etc...

Q2: would these particular binoculars be suitable for looking at the stars?

A: If you want to look just at stars, just about any binocular will do. A star will appear as a pinpoint of light, even in the largest telescope! If you're interested in looking at the Moon or planets, though, you'll want something with more magnification. We'd recommend 10X at a minimum. More is better!

A: Jason is no longer made under its own name; Bushnell bought the company out. However, you can still get Permafocus binoculars. The Bushnell 7x50 Wide Angle, Permafocus binocular isn't the old Jason, but it's pretty close.
